Throughout the first half of 2014, the attraction underwent its first "dry rehab" (a refurbishment involving draining the entire lagoon). Other than the addition of the projection screens, the only noticeable modification to the attraction was moving the entrance waterfall up quite a distance, reducing the amount of time the subs spend outside and necessitating lengthy closures of the monorail to allow construction of the show building extension to take place. The current attraction uses the same subs and tracks layout as the original Submarine Voyage. It featured eight "submarines" (actually submarine-shaped boats with the guest seating area below the waterline), which sailed through Submarine Lagoon, past animatronic sea life, and simulated a trip under the polar ice cap. The Submarine Voyage, as it was originally called, opened on June 6, 1959. Toothed whales, on the other hand, don’t do this, and have to grab food one piece at a time. Baleen whales usually eat small fish or krill, so these plates have to be very close together to make sure nothing escapes. The food get caught on the baleen and are stuck inside the mouth, which is then swallowed whole. They take a huge gulp of food and water, and they use their massive tongues to push the water out of their mouths through the baleen plates. This is exactly the way that baleen whales eat. All of the water escapes but the food that you want stays inside. This whole thing acts like a filter, similar to how you would drain water from pasta. So if you imagine a long structure hanging from the top jaw that looks like a huge comb but feels like a fingernail. The protein inside those parts are called keratin, which is what baleen is made out of. Now you’re probably wondering, what in the world is “baleen”? Well, you’re familiar with fingernails and hair that’s on your body. Speaking of food that whales eat, not all whales have teeth! Whales are split into two categories: toothed whales and baleen whales. So that’s one thing to cross off your list of worries in the world. The throats of whales are actually only as big as a basketball, which is big enough for small fish and other smaller animals but not big enough for a person. This is also untrue because whales would not like the taste of humans, and their throats are physically too small to let them swallow an adult-sized person. Plus, they are breathing out with such a force it sends the condensed air as high as 12 feet in the air! Whales can hold up to 1,320 gallons of air in their lungs at a time, depending on the species.Īnother myth is that some people may believe is that whales can eat people if they have the chance.
When the whale breathes out, the air inside of their body is much warmer than the surrounding outside air, so when the air is breathed out, the water sitting on top of their blowhole is condensed and sent flying into the air.
It’s similar to our breath on a cold day. The “water” that you see coming out of the blowhole is actually condensed water vapor.
